Sometimes there are more important things than sports

I know everyone is gearing up for the first big NFL Sunday of the season and we are certainly excited here at Third Base Sports Bar as well. However, today is a great time to reflect on some things that are bigger than sports. Ten years ago today our country was attacked by terrorists. Lives were lost, buildings destroyed, dreams shattered as planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York. I am sure almost everyone can remember exactly where they were when they heard the news. Let us not forget those that were affected by this tragedy and the first-responders that stepped up to help out in a time of need.

This past week in our own community, we had some heros of our own. As the Austin Metro area was ravaged by wild fires, our hometown heros fought bravely to contain the disaster. It was also great to see how one of our local sports teams stepped up to help in the efforts. Texas Stars hockey Team Captain Brad Lukowich took to his Twitter account at @Luko37 to offer assistance and a safe place to stay for those displaced by the fires. In addition, he shared information about how to donate and help during the tragedy. The Texas Stars Foundation announced this week that they would be donating $10,000 to the Austin Disaster Relief Network to support their efforts in response to the wildfires.

Third Base is also doing its part to help out in this time of need. All of our locations are accepting donations to assist the community and the downtown location will be hosting a Deep Stack Charity Poker Tournament on Wednesday, September 21st to aid fire victims in the Austin area. There have been some great prizes donated and it is a $30 suggested donation to participate. If you bring two grocery bag donations of canned/hard items you will receive an additional $20K chip.

Cheer on your favorite team today, but take a minute to reflect on the tragedies we have faced as a nation and a city. Let’s go Austin!
